General guide bar information

The cutting result of the saw as well as the lifetime of the chain essentially depends on the maintenance and care of the guide bar. Important is the use of the HOLTEC guide bar rectifier for egalisation of the chain guiding surface as soon as burr formation is recognisable.

At guide bars which are worn on one side only you should analyze the complete guide bar and after a necessary repair of the guide bar you should replace the saw chain if necessary.

For taking much pleasure in your cutting assembly you should pay attention to the following:

By the wear of the guide bar frames the thickness of the special hard alloy is reduced. When this is completely worn the guide bar is unuseable and has to be replaced. By means of the spark test it can be recognised during the egalization process if carbide alloy is still available. The spark of the alloy comprises of a dark red, barely visible stream which can be clearly differentiated from the many light yellow streams of the base material.

Depending on the type of chain a more or less saw burr (a) on the outer edges of the guide bar frame arises. This one as well as unevenly worn guide bar frames (b) can excellentrly be leveled by means of the HOLTEC guide bar rectifier.

A constricted guide bar groove (a) results in a chain clamping. The guide bar has to be widened. Spread guide bar fames are caused by external impact (b). This results in a high wear on the sliding surfaces of the saw chain and a bended cut as the chain wiggles in the groove. The guide bar frame has to be adjusted in that case.

Correct!!!

Always new or levelled guide bar with one new set of chains.

Wrong!!!

The use of new chains on worn guide bars.

Wrong!!!

The use of new or leveled guide bars with unevenly worn chains.

Please pay attention: The HOLTEC guide bars are 4-fold turnable. Always use alternating in regular intervals on one guide bar one set of chains until the chains are worn (consisting of 4 scratcher chains or 4 chipper chains or 2 carbide tipped chains).
Before using a new set of chains the guide bar has to be leveled.
